2017 Summer Newsletter - Rose Care No Images? Click here Summer is a fantastic time of year to be out enjoying your rose garden. Care throughout summer is relatively easy, however continuing the beautiful growth we achieved during spring can be difficult when battling heat. To encourage more blooms and keep your roses looking lush, we have put together some helpful tips to get you through these warmer months... Rose Care for Summer: The main tasks to keep your roses healthy over summer will be watering, dead heading and spraying with a bit of fertilizer near Christmas. AVOIDING HEAT DAMAGE Roses can show signs of heat damage by wilting leaves, sun-burnt stems or scorched leaves and petals. To protect your roses from becoming damaged by the heat make sure they are well watered. With enough moisture around the roots the plant will be able to push enough sap through the stems to protect itself from the heat and sun. The moisture will also help keep the roots cool, insulating them from any heat that may cause the roots to burn. Click below for more information. WATER IS THE KEY TO LIFE! Water is one of the most important factors to keeping your roses healthy. Make sure you regularly water your roses, especially over summer. Remember a deep water twice or three times a week is better than light watering everyday. PESTS AND DISEASES - PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE Keeping a regular spraying regime BEFORE symptoms appear. For those who have a hot dry summer, you can relax your spray programme for the fungal diseases but watch out for the two spotted mites, thrip and aphids who love dry conditions. Gardener's without dry conditions, keep up the spray program and your roses will be lovely all summer. For best results spray regularly, every two weeks. Our recommendation: Mix Eco-Oil, Eco-Fungicide and Charlie Carp together with water (follow dosage instructions on the back of each product). This three-in-one spray will help deter pests and fungal diseases while also giving the roses a foliar-feed. Repeat this spray every two weeks as prevention, or every week if problems are occurring. GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR FLOWERS Summer is a great time of year to be enjoying the beautiful blooms produced by our roses. Dead Heading: Encourage your roses to produce more flowers by removing spent blooms as soon as possible. Cut Flowers: Placing flowers in a vase is a great way to enjoy your roses inside.
