How to grow healthy roses?

Growing healthy roses can be a rewarding and enjoyable hobby, but it does require some knowledge and effort to do successfully. At Treloar Roses, we want to make this process as easy and seamless as possible. We believe that gardening should be enjoyable and stress-free.

So here are some tips on how to pick a healthy rose plant, how to take care of it properly, and how to maintain healthy roses.

It starts with a healthy plant

Let’s start with the basics. Your rose bush has to be healthy and in a state where it can thrive. So when we chose your roses, we ensure we deliver only the highest quality roses.

A variety of rose that works for you, with a good root system, healthy leaves and an overall healthy appearance.

Treat your bush with tender love and care

Once you have received your healthy rose bush, now is time to plant and care for it with some TLC. So here are some tips from us to help your roses thrive in their new home.

  1. Plant your roses in well-draining soil. Roses prefer soil rich in organic matter, and it should drain well to prevent the roots from becoming waterlogged.

  2. Give your roses the right amount of sunlight. Most roses require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, although some varieties may need more or less. Be sure to plant your roses in a location that gets the appropriate amount of sunlight.

  3. Water your roses properly. Roses need to be watered regularly, but be careful not to over-water them. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and be sure to water the roots rather than just the foliage.

  4. Fertilize your roses. Use a balanced fertiliser, such as Sudden Impact for Roses, to provide your roses with the nutrients they need to thrive. Follow the recommended application rates on the package, and fertilize your roses during the growing season - as per product recommendation.

  5. Prune your roses regularly. Pruning helps to encourage new growth and remove dead or diseased branches. It is generally recommended to prune roses in winter during the plant's dormant period.

  6. Protect your roses from pests and diseases. Products like Eco-Oil  (link to product page online) or Eco-Neem are great for controlling insects such as aphids, scale, aphids, two-spotted mites, whitefly, mealybugs and citrus leafminer. It is safe to use on veggies, fruit & ornamentals and also for the beneficial insects you want in your garden like bees, ladybeetles and earthworms.

Let it thrive

Taking continued and consistent care of your rose plant will help it to thrive and produce beautiful flowers. Here are some extra tips you may want to consider:

  1.  Mulch your roses. Mulching helps to retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Use mulch such as Sugar cane, Mushroom compost, Garden compost or Who Flung Dung - Neturog's supercharged mulch, and apply a layer about 2-3 inches thick around the base of the plant.

  2. Be mindful of the weather. Some rose varieties are more tolerant of extreme weather conditions than others, so choose a variety that is suited to your climate. In areas with hot summers, it may be necessary to provide your roses with additional shade and water during dry spells and to survive extreme heat.

  3. Protect your roses from extreme cold. In areas with cold winters, it is important to protect your roses from freezing temperatures. Cover your roses with a layer of mulch or straw, or wrap them in burlap to insulate them.

  4. Deadhead your roses. Deadheading, or removing spent flowers, helps to encourage new growth and prolong the blooming season. Simply snip off the spent flowers at the base of the stem, and your roses will continue to produce new flowers.
