Easy to grow rose bushes for beginners

Whilst undeniably beautiful, roses were traditionally quite demanding plants, prone to many diseases and requiring a fair amount of special attention.

There are some wonderful varieties of roses now available, which have been carefully cultivated for their hardiness and resistance to disease. These equally stunning, yet much lower maintenance roses are much easier to care for, offering spectacular colour and fragrance from spring through to autumn.

Treloar Roses’ selection of new, healthy roses and rose bushes for beginners is a great place to start enjoying fuss-free roses, year after year.

Are roses easy for beginners to grow?

Roses are a delightful addition to any garden. Once established, they generally require very little attention, however while they are young or newly planted, they do require a little extra care to help them develop into hardy, well-established plants.

When deciding what types of roses to select for your garden, there are a lot of factors to consider. We believe that the Health Rating, or star rating is the most important. Healthy roses tend to be much easier to care for, because they do not require spraying, and they are generally roses that bloom all summer, through to autumn.

What are the best rose plants for beginners to try?

Healthy roses – those with a higher star rating – are the best for beginners to try their hand at.

We have made it easy to search by Health Rating on our website, so you can easily find the most appropriate roses to suit your garden and your level of expertise. For beginners, the best rose bushes are those with a 4-5 star rating; the higher the star rating, the more success you are likely to have with that particular plant.

There are so many beautiful varieties to choose from. You can use the filters to find the perfect roses for your garden; search by colour, classification, and whether you prefer bare root or potted.

When in the best time to plant a rose bush?

The best time to plant roses is during the winter while they are dormant/bare root, however it is possible to plant potted roses during the growing season, you just need to take a little extra care

If you think that you would like to try your hand at growing roses, you should begin by preparing the soil around 6-8 weeks in advance.

Roses can live for up to 50 years with the right care, so giving your roses the best start possible by providing optimal growing conditions in the first two years of planting will ensure that you grow beautiful plants that will reward you for many years to come.

All roses from Treloar Roses come with a planting guide, and you should follow those instructions carefully for the best chance of growing successfully. Of course, our expert team are always here to help as well, so please feel free to phone or email with any questions that you may have.
